Being odious is sometimes confused with being misanthropic. The two traits are very alike one another, but odious is just plain out being hateful towards everything, whereas being misanthropic is just hating people.
This is a tricky word because it means "hateful" in the sense of arousing or deserving hate. An ODIOUS crime, for example, is one that deserves hatred, or at least distaste. In your sentences, behaving ODIOUSLY means arousing hatred or distaste in someone else.
